We invite you on a journey to “the edge of the world,” to the place where the famous Pillars of Hercules stand, beyond which once lay the legendary Atlantis. Here, the Strait of Gibraltar connects the Mediterranean Sea with the Atlantic Ocean, whose waters wash the shores of southern Spain and Portugal. Our route will take us through lands steeped in ancient legends, from where Spanish and Portuguese conquistadors once set off on their long voyages.
This trip is the ideal option for travelers who want to get the maximum information, impressions, and enjoyment from their journey in the minimum amount of time! Judge for yourself—within a single week we will visit the southern regions of two countries, Spain and Portugal: colorful Andalusia and the no less picturesque Algarve region. You will visit the places from which Columbus departed on his first voyage, you will be amazed by the mountain city of Ronda—where the first bullfighting arena was built—and the welcoming city of Malaga, birthplace of the great Picasso, will forever remain in your memory as the capital of Spain’s Costa del Sol and a city of museums.
In neighboring Portugal, we will visit Lagos, the ancient capital of the region during the Age of Discovery, as well as Faro and Sagres, where the first navigation school of medieval Europe was located. You will taste local wines and try traditional almond and fig sweets. And no one will remain indifferent to the visit to Cape St. Vincent, the southwesternmost point of the Eurasian continent, where watching the sunset slowly descend into the waters of the Atlantic becomes an unforgettable natural spectacle.
But that is far from all! One cannot describe everything—you must come and see it. Are you ready?
Day 1
Arrival in Málaga. Group transfer to a hotel on the Costa del Sol. Check-in.
Day 2
Breakfast at the hotel. Check out with luggage. Málaga city tour. Founded by the Phoenicians and now the largest port in southern Mediterranean Spain, Málaga is also the birthplace of Picasso. We begin with a viewpoint offering a magnificent panorama of the old city. The Roman era is represented by picturesque ruins of the ancient theater at the foot of the Arab fortress Alcazaba. The city was reconquered by Christians at the end of the 15th century, and in the 16th century construction began on a grand cathedral, which remains unfinished.
After exploring the historic center, we head toward Ronda, beloved by romantic writers. Located in the mountains 100 km from Málaga at an altitude of 740 meters, Ronda is extraordinarily colorful. In 1785 the first bullfighting arena was built here; it still operates today, and only a few matadors are honored to perform in it.
A scenic mountain road will take us to the coast, to the famous resort of Marbella, a true "fair of vanity," where we will make a short stop in Puerto Banús, a world-renowned yacht harbor. We then continue to the city of La Línea and check into our hotel.
Day 3
Breakfast at the hotel. Check out with luggage. Excursion to Gibraltar, a small peninsula of about 7 sq. km. Now a British territory, its status is still disputed between Spain and the United Kingdom. During our tour of this “little Britain” we will visit the unique underground chambers—the St. Michael’s Caves.
After Gibraltar, we head to Cádiz, considered the oldest city in Europe, founded by the Phoenicians nearly 3,000 years ago.
From Cádiz we continue to the city officially known as Jerez de la Frontera, meaning “Jerez on the frontier.” Once the frontier dividing Christian and Arab lands, Jerez later became world famous for the wine produced here since time immemorial.
Overnight in either Huelva or Punta Umbría on the Atlantic coast. Overnight in a hotel on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean.
Day 4
Breakfast at the hotel. Today we head to Portugal, but first we stop in the historic town of Palos de la Frontera, from where Columbus set off on his first voyage that resulted in the discovery of America. Then we continue to the Portuguese town of Tavira on the Gulf of Cádiz. A short walk through its 13th-century center, then transfer to Faro, the capital of the Algarve. We explore the historic center and have free time for lunch and shopping.
To end the day, we visit the modern port city of Vilamoura—the most fashionable resort in southern Portugal. Although the city does not have centuries-old Gothic monuments, it offers several interesting sites.
Transfer to Portimão or Albufeira. Hotel check-in.
Day 5
Breakfast at the hotel. Check out with luggage. We will visit two small cozy towns, Loulé and Silves, then ascend Mount Monchique to enjoy stunning views of Portugal’s southern coast. Founded by the Romans, Silves was once the capital of the Algarve and holds significant historical importance.
Day 6
Breakfast at the hotel. Today is rich in experiences. We will travel to Ponta da Piedade to view the spectacular natural grottos. You will learn about a key figure in maritime history—Henry the Navigator—and visit Lagos, the ancient capital during the Age of Discovery. There we walk through the historic center, learn about the history of the slave trade, and see the place where Black slaves were sold for the first time in recorded history. You will have free time to shop for cork goods, regional ceramics, or take a boat trip through the caves, weather permitting. At the end of the tour we visit Sagres, home of medieval Europe’s first navigation school. And the highlight of the day is visiting the most famous site of the Algarve coast—Cape St. Vincent, the southwesternmost point of the Eurasian continent, which the Romans named the “edge of the earth” or the Sacred Cape (Promontorium Sacrum).
Day 7
Breakfast at the hotel. We finish our tour of southern Portugal and head toward the country’s capital—Lisbon—where we will stay in the resort area on the Costa da Caparica.
